frequently asked questions

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a therapy created by Marsha Linehan to support people living with borderline personality disorder and suicidal behaviours. It was adapted from CBT originally and further developed to assist this client base, since this time, DBT has been shown to be evidence based for a large number of different presentations and needs.

DBT is generally presented as a comprehensive program including group skills training, individual therapy, and 24/7 access to a therapist. Such programs are quite limited in Australia.

A Life Worth Living was developed to increase access to skills training around Australia and the world. By offering training on the skills in a self-paced course format it is able to be offered at a lower price, and to people who would not otherwise be able to access skills training.

As a rural practice, Regenerative Psychology values increased access to services and specifically identified a need for DBT skills.

The course includes 24 skills and an additional module on boundary setting (linked to interpersonal effectiveness), in a weekly release format. The content for each week includes videos, handouts, and a self-practice. Most weeks include custom worksheets where appropriate. The course teaches you about the skills including how they are used and why. It is not therapy.

The course does not provide access to a therapist, or individual therapy. The course is not tailored to the individual.

You may choose the course over a group:

  • If you do not have access to a local / telehealth group program
  • If group is not affordable
  • When group is not suitable for your needs (e.g., you experience social anxiety which would prevent engagement / intake of information, or you need longer to process information than available in the group)
  • If the course is recommended by your therapist as a self-help, or guided therapy program (run by them)
  • You have a preference for online programming as opposed to interactive groups

In standard DBT therapy is a requirement of participation in group skills training. As this is a self-paced course for education and self-help purposes, we cannot require you to engage in therapy.

This said, many people benefit from therapy interventions, and you may benefit from therapy in addition to this course. If you are unsure, consider discussing your needs with your GP, or contact a local psychology clinic to discuss your needs.

Regenerative Psychology provides therapy separate to the course. Subject to availability, we may be able to offer guided therapy, or individual therapy for residents of Australia.
