Heal from the Past with EMDR Therapy

Trauma-informed, strengths-based, and accessible to regional and rural Australians.

What is EMDR?

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help your brain reprocess distressing memories and restore emotional balance. Rather than lengthy talk therapy, EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation (e.g. eye movements, tapping, or audio) alongside targeted memory processing to reduce the intensity of traumatic or distressing experiences.

EMDR is most widely recognised for supporting people with trauma, post-traumatic stress, and distress linked to past events, but can also assist with anxiety, emotional dysregulation, low mood, and stress-related issues when used appropriately.

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR may help if you:

  • Have experienced trauma, loss, abuse, or crisis events
  • Feel distressed by memories, triggers, or intense emotions
  • Struggle with anxiety, panic, or recurring worry linked to the past
  • Want to reduce the emotional impact of old memories or beliefs
  • Are seeking a therapy that works with your nervous system, not just talk

We offer EMDR for people aged 16 and over, with flexible telehealth sessions available to support clients across rural and remote areas.

How We Work; Safe, Collaborative, Individualised

Assessment & Readiness Check

We begin with a careful intake to understand your history, current stressors, and coping capacity. If EMDR isn’t suitable yet, we’ll offer stabilisation alternatives or refer to other support.

Tailored Session Planning

Rather than rigidly following protocol, we adapt EMDR to your pace, context, and needs. That might mean working slowly through memories, building coping resources, or integrating grounding between sessions.

Bilateral Stimulation & Integration

Using eye-tracking, tapping, or audio rhythms alongside guided recall, we help your brain safely reprocess memories, aiming for reduced distress, new perspectives, and better emotional regulation.

Support & Aftercare

Healing doesn’t end at the session. We help you build resilience, coping tools, and grounding practices to support long-term wellbeing.

Before You Start

EMDR can be deeply healing, but it can also stir strong emotions. It works best when you:

  • Feel safe and supported in your environment
  • Have basic coping and grounding tools (breathing, safe space, support network)
  • Are willing to engage collaboratively and communicate openly with your therapist

If you’re unsure whether EMDR is right for you, our team will help you explore options and support readiness before beginning reprocessing work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sessions involve guided recall of distressing memories while using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or audio tones). Your therapist checks in regularly, supports regulation, and ensures the pace feels safe. You stay awake, aware, and in control at all times.

Yes — when delivered by a trained trauma-informed clinician. EMDR can bring up strong emotions, so your therapist will ensure you have grounding strategies and coping supports before beginning memory processing. If you’re not ready for EMDR yet, we’ll focus on stabilisation first.

Yes. EMDR can be effectively delivered online, including bilateral stimulation using visual or audio methods. We adapt the approach based on your internet connection, privacy, environment, and comfort levels, making it accessible for rural and remote clients.

This varies. Some people notice improvement within a few sessions of reprocessing; others need longer-term support. Factors include the complexity of trauma, current stressors, your nervous system needs, and readiness for deeper work. Your therapist will guide you collaboratively.

No. EMDR does not require you to describe traumatic events in detail. You only need to bring the memory to mind, your therapist does not need to know all specifics unless you want to share them.

It’s normal to feel emotional, tired, or unsettled after sessions as your brain continues processing. This usually settles within a day or two. Your therapist will help you build tools to manage any emotional shifts between sessions.

EMDR is well-supported for trauma and PTSD and can also assist with anxiety, panic, grief, emotional overwhelm, low mood, and distress linked to past events.

We currently offer EMDR for clients aged 16 and over.

You can self-refer for EMDR. A GP referral is only needed if you plan to access Medicare rebates.

You don’t need to prepare anything formal. It can help to:

  • Find a quiet, private space
  • Have a glass of water or grounding object nearby
  • Check your device and internet connection

Your therapist will guide everything else.

Yes, EMDR can be effective for complex trauma, but often requires a slower, phased approach focusing first on safety, stabilisation, and resource-building. Your therapist will tailor the process to your needs.

We’ll explore other trauma-informed approaches that may be a better fit. You’re never pressured to continue with EMDR if it doesn’t feel helpful or safe.
